4:16 MARKET UPDATE PM: After a cautious
start, the
benchmark indices Sensex and the
Nifty recorded their new
all-time highs in morning trade on Tuesday, but retreated soon and
eventually ended the session flat, amid alternate bouts of buying and
selling in front line
stocks.
With investors mostly staying away
on the sidelines, choosing to wait for some clear signals, the market
was quite sluggish almost right through the day. Barring stocks from oil
and capital goods sectors, others really struggled to force their way
up.
The
Sensex, which rose to 22,853.03, ended the day with a marginal
loss of 6.46 points or 0.03% at 22,758.37. The Nifty settled at 6815.35,
off a new high of 6838, recording a loss of 2.30 points or 0.03%.
Reliance
Industries and ONGC ended nearly 1% up, despite paring a good portion
of their gains. BPCL (4%), Indian Oil Corporation ( 3.75%) and
Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (2.75%), Oil India (2.4%) and Petronet LNG (2.1%)
rallied sharply. GAIL India (1.5%) too closed on a bright note. Cairn
India edged up marginally.Among
capital goods stocks, Larsen & Toubro
ended 1.7% up. BHEL failed to retain early gains and ended just
marginally up. SKF India, Suzlon Energy, VA Tech Wabag, AIA Engineering,
Havells India and IL&FS Transportation Networks also closed with
strong gains.
HDFC Bank ended 1.4% with strong results aiding
sentiment. HDFC Bank posted a net profit of Rs 2326.52 crore for the
quarter ended March 2014, up 23.11% from previous corresponding quarter.
